Final conference of the Project “Mare Nostrum - Common approach to upgrade asylum facilities in Italy and Malta”
The final conference of the Project “Mare Nostrum - Common approach to upgrade asylum facilities in Italy and Malta” was held on June 30th, at 9.30 am at the NIHMP Conference Hall. The project was financed by the European Refugee Fund and involved international partners such as the Italian Ministry of Interior, the Ministry for Justice and Home Affairs of Malta, the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The conference saw the participation of representatives of the institutions that contributed to the achievement of the expected results and Italian, Maltese and International personalities committed with the assistance and reception of refugees and asylum seekers.

About the project
Since January 2010, the NIHMP is in Malta as a partner of the project “Mare Nostrum”, financed by the European Refugee Fund of the European Commission. The main applicant of the project is the Italian Ministry of the Interiors, the Maltese Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs and the International Organisation for Migration also participate in the action. The objective of the project is to improve health care for the asylum seekers hosted in Maltese open centres and Italian reception centres through training and information campaigns for health, civil and police operators. Project duration is 18 months.
Objectives of the project
To improve health care for the asylum seekers hosted in Maltese open centres and Italian reception centres through:
- the provision of second-level health assistance (in Malta),
- training campaigns for health, civil and police operators and dissemination of information materials in Malta and Italy.
Actions
• Provision of second-level health assistance in the Maltese centres by a team of specialised doctors (8 months)
• Creation of a Practical Handbook (in Italian and English) for health operators containing diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines
• Creation of a Guide (in Italian and English) on prevention and transmission of transmittable diseases for civil and police operators working in the Centres
• Organisation of training activities on migration and health for Maltese Italian health operators
• Organisation of training activities on migration and health-related issues for Maltese and Italian civil and police operators
