Renata Polverini, President of the Lazio Region, visits the NIHMP - Photos and Video
“I consider myself as a friend of this Institute and of all the people working for it: it is not only a question of professional engagement, but of human commitment. A sense of inclusion is perceived when entering the NIHMP, where the word integration finds effective application in the health process”.
The visit that Hon. Renata Polverini paid to the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP) - Ancient San Gallicano Hospital consolidates the relationship between the Institute and the President of the Lazio Region, based on mutual esteem and going further the recognition of the scientific, clinical, research and training work of the Institute.
A mission started in the early Eighties and that led to the reception and assistance of more than 126,000 people, both Italian and foreign, as the Director General, Prof. Aldo Morrone, stated.
A high-level multi-specialised undertaking that, continuing the ancient commitment of the San Gallicano Hospital started in 1725, is mostly addressed to disadvantaged Italian and foreign people. The Social Dentistry and Ophthalmology services have recently enlarged the offer of the outpatient department, confirming the necessity to strengthen health care and prevention on the territory for the weakest population groups.
During the first 4 months of activity, the Dentistry service assisted 400 people, 40% of them Italians. According to the data of the ISTAT (i.e. Italian Institute of Statistics), 86% of people referring to a dentist covers the entire costs for treatment.
Since January 2010, the Ophthalmology Service assisted 1805 patients, 65% of them Italians. But the most remarkable and demanding result achieved by the Institute, outlines the Director General, is the opening of the outpatient department on Saturday and Sunday. The initiative aims at facilitating access to health care services. Indeed, during the weekend, 86% of the people referring to the first aid stations has slight health problems, and this situation increases the health care expenditure.
Prof. Aldo Morrone was deeply moved when he explained to President Polverini that the NIHMP model, based on low costs and high efficacy, allowed to improve the health care services, offering, thanks to the opening on the weekends, the access of more than 1,000 people in four months.
The commitment of the NIHMP was recognised at the national level with the quality certificate ISO 9001, and at the international level with the UKAS certificate. The Institute was also awarded with a medal by the President of the Italian Republic for its thirty-year experience in the field of social and health assistance.
“A work that the NIHMP staff carries on with passion, proud of being part of the Lazio Region”, said Prof. Morrone.
“The world is changing, and after the presentation of Prof. Morrone, I firmly believe that the ongoing change is here expressed in its more valuable and constructive aspects”.
This is how Renata Polverini outlined the social and health care commitment of the Institute, which deserves to be part of a new regional health planning offering more adequate services meeting the needs of the citizens of the Lazio Region.
“Answering people’s needs. This is the basis for a new model of the regional health planning. This Institute represents an example for many other Institutes at the regional and non-regional levels”.
“An extraordinary work that must be included in the regional health planning and recognised as a Scientific Institute for Hospitalisation and Treatment (IRCCS), the Regional Authority will commit itself for the achievement of this objective”.
The President also expressed her will to find out new strategies to meet the needs of disadvantaged women and minors: also for the achievement of this objective, the long experience and the human and professional capacity of the NIHMP represent a referral point.
